CBC: Men’s Hockey Semifinal Set Record 625,000 Mobile and Desktop Viewers

A couple days ago the CBC released data which revealed its iOS and Android Olympics app had surpassed 2 million total downloads. The excellent CBC Olympics app allows fans to stream live events right on their iOS device, making it a popular app for those unable to watch in front of a TV or on the web.

The CBC has informed us of updated mobile and online streaming stats via email after the massive 1-0 win by Canada over the USA in the Men’s Ice Hockey Semifinal. The thrilling game set a new record for the highest online viewing audience ever for a CBC live event, “with a (preliminary) average audience of more than 625,000 on CBC and Radio-Canada’s desktop and mobile devices combined,” according to a CBC Sports/Olympics publicist.

This number almost doubled the previous record, which was at 325,000, during the Women’s Ice Hockey gold medal game, where Canada was victorious over the USA. When Men’s Hockey played Latvia, 280,000 online viewers was the previous record.

In total, CBC’s Olympic Winter Games has seen 32.8 million Canadians (as of Feb. 22) tune in to content in either French or English platforms, based on data from Adobe Site Catalyst and BBM Canada.
