Unreal Engine 4 Available as $19/Month Subscription, Coming Soon to OS X
Epic Games has today announced that its Unreal Engine 4 will now be available as a $19 monthly subscription. According to Engadget, the subscription will give access to everything, including the Unreal Editor in ready-to-run form, and the engine’s complete C++ source code hosted on GitHub for collaborative development.

While speaking at a GDC event this morning, Epic Games head Tim Sweeney said that in addition to the monthly subscription, any game published commercially must also pay 5% of gross profit to Epic for using its latest Unreal Engine. The report also adds that beyond the subscription service and full access to the source code, Unreal Engine 4 is also going to receive Mac OS X support.
“As the world’s most advanced game engine, Unreal Engine 4 gives you the power to do more than ever before. Unreal Engine 4 offers a deep, intuitive toolset and low-level access to code, cutting down on development time and ensuring faster iteration on creative ideas. With a completely new rendering architecture, Unreal Engine 4 enables you to achieve high-end visuals, while remaining both scalable and accessible to make games for low-end systems.”
Engadget claims that there’s also evidence in the source code that Epic is working on Linux, Steam Machines and HTML5 support.
