1Password for iOS is Currently a Free Download ($17.99 Value)! [u]

1Password for iOS is currently a free download right now. Normally priced at $17.99, it’s showing as free in the App Store.

This is the password manager we use and it’s by far one of the best and the top app we always recommend. Oh, and it’s also Made in Canada by the cool cats from AgileBits.

We’re not sure why this is free right now, as the deepest discounts we’ve seen for 1Password are around 50% off, but rarely has it been listed as free. The app normally retails for $17.99 but was price-dropped to $9.99 last month.

Nevertheless, the spike in downloads should push 1Password to the top of the App Store rankings in time for iOS 8’s release tomorrow and the upcoming use of Touch ID for unlocking the app’s master vault.

Update: AgileBits has announced 1Password 5 for iOS has gone to a freemium model, which has an in-app purchase for the following new Pro features:

  • Create the full range of items including Bank Accounts, Email Accounts, Memberships, Passports, Reward Programs, Wireless Routers, Software Licenses, and many more.
  • Organize your items with folders and tags.
  • Create and add Multiple Vaults.
  • Add custom fields to all items.
  • Support a great company with world-class human-powered customer service that loves you. Yes, including you

According to a blog post I read earlier (it’s been taken down by now), it says it’s caused by an App Store bug o.O

I clicked on the link on this page, its still there and still Free to download. Downloading it now incase it is a “glitch” since not even the devs are promoting it as “Free”.

When I click on the “free” download button in iTunes, a notification comes up asking me to approve my billing info? I think I’ll pass unless someone can explain to me why that happens. on other “free” apps that occurrence doesn’t happen.

Most likely its a glitch, I was able to download without problems. So chances are this app being free is a fluke and apple is rectifying it maybe?

Just d/l now @7:15est. Still free. Wonder if they will get you at the back end with some sort of subscription fee to continue to use?

No, I think it will just go back to paid after today’s launch of iOS 8.

I’m wondering of it might stay free as the App of the Week despite the price error.

Question for anyone who’s used it before. For things like online banking etc, you’ll still need to purchase the desktop version so that you can access your accounts on your desktop/laptop, or no?

The iOS app is a companion to the service which brings all your vault passwords to iOS. If you’d like to have it on your laptop/desktop, you’d need the MAC or PC software.

I use both iOS and Mac version. It’s a time saver because chances are I will be prompted to change pw while on a Mac..the change is updated on 1PW on my iPhone…and it’s made by a Canadian company too..

I’ve tried it in earnest (more than once), and it simply can’t compare to RoboForm. Gary is often flogging this product and it never appears to be for the right reasons.

I’m not alone is sharing my love for 1Password. Check the buzz on Twitter right now, people are going batshit crazy over this freebie. This is one of the best password managers. You need to try it again.

Roboform? Yuck.

Eventually freemium?

Gary,
The version that went free this morning was still version 4. I grabbed it and I have all the Pro features, and there is no in-app purchase. There is now an update to V5 waiting for download so I’m guessing I’ve bypassed the freemium model :). I’ll wait to download V5 on my i6+ on Friday to see if it treats it as a regular paid V4 upgrade. What is the cost of the Pro upgrade? I doubt I’ll use it – since eWallet suits my needs so far and is so much cheaper ($10 per platform). I just can’t see forking over $50 for the desktop version! But if the convenience factor wins out, I may just have to go through the pain.

I have all the features that were listed as Pro, and I can’t find any option for in-app purchase. Where might it be hidden?
