iPhone 6 Plus Reportedly Bending in User Pockets [PICS]

Bent iphone6 plus

A growing number of MacRumors forum members are reporting that they have accidentally bent their iPhone 6 Plus devices after carrying them in their pockets. According to one user, his new iPhone 6 Plus was bent in his pocket during “a day of dancing, dining, and driving to a wedding”. Here’s what he says:

“Yesterday, I left at 10am with the iPhone in my left FRONT pocket of my suit pants. I drove 4 hours to a wedding, which also involved a lot of sitting during dinner etc but also 2-3 hours of dancing. I left at 2am and went to bed, driving home 4 hours back.

So in total, the 6 Plus was about 18 hours in my pocket while sitting mostly.

As I lay it on the coffee table and sat down on the couch to relax from the drive (yes, sitting again ), I saw the reflection of the window in the iPhones slightly distorted.”

Of course the pocket bending potential of iPhone 6 Plus is nothing new as iPhone 5/5s and iPhone 4/4S have also been reported bending in the past. In case of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus though, the devices may be a little more susceptible to bending due to their larger, thinner chassis. Nonetheless, one must always be careful while carrying a smartphone or phablet in his or her pocket.

It is always a good idea to remove the iPhone from your pocket before sitting, or in case it is not possible to do so, we suggest you use a rigid protective case to prevent excessive flexing or bending of the device.

Have you experienced the phenomenon with your iPhone in the past?

Was he wearing a skinny suit? It’s definitely big and not that comfortable in the pocket but that’s surprising

I was thinking the same thing. Jacket pocket (inside or outside) would’ve been more ideal.

I’m only a few days in but I kinda wish I got the 6 instead of the 6 plus. The fact it isn’t as comfy in my non skinny Jean pocket being the primary reason

It could be worse….those 6″+ Android/WP phones can be much more uncomfortable in your pocket.

They really should of just came out with a single phone, a middle ground between the 4.7 and 5.5. Like a 1080P 5″ screen with an O.S. back cam. The 5.5 is really just too huge for a friggen phone.

I went the Apple Store this morning and was playing around with the 6. After a few minutes I decided that I’ll deal with it and keep the 6 Plus. The 6 felt so small when I’ve been using the 6 Plus for a few days. It fits in my pocket and isn’t really noticable when someone looks at me but I can certainly feel it. I’ll get used to it though.

The only way I can see it bending in half (like in the picture above) is if the phone was laying horizontally in your pocket, across the curve of your quads. If the phone was vertical in your pocket, it shouldn’t bend at all, and certainly not across the mid section, as in the picture.

Yikes. A phone we should be afraid of keeping in our pockets?

*Back* pockets, yes. I usually carry mine in the front anyway, so this isn’t a big deal for me.

I squatted with my 5S in my pocket over the past year. No bends yet. Going to try squatting in tight lulu lemon pants with my 6 Plus to see if it will bend.

For 16 years I had phones, multiple iPhone included, suddenly the new Phone I buy cannot be placed in my front pocket like I always did because it has a default near the volume button.

Chocolate bar have always been like that and they cost 1$.

iPhones cost 800$+ and iPhone+ cost more. How the hell something that can cost as much as 1000$ is unable to be placed in a front pocket like all other normally built phones.

This is not normal.
Waiting for Apple to say “You pocket it wrong” like the antennagate…

By the way it is called iPhone, not iPad.

Am I the only one that thinks something isn’t right with that story. I guess anythings possible but it seems so unlikely that that damage was done from sitting in a suit pocket. I’m calling BS on that one.

The bigger concern is what happens to circuit boards when this bending occurs and at what point is functionality lost. With increasing levels of sophistication, companies use circuit boards with more layers. But as more layers are added to meet that functionality, the individual layers need to be thinner. Thus they become ever more susceptible to drops and circuit breaks (sometimes at the microscopic level). Expect to see reports of lost functionality on these same forums at some point.

You just look at the 6+ and you KNOW it should not go in any pocket.
