Apple Briefly Pulls Telegram From App Store Over Content Violation

Millions of iPhone users woke up to unexpected drama on Monday when Telegram suddenly disappeared from the App Store. The mystery was solved when Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared an official statement from Apple clarifying the situation.

Existing users who already had Telegram installed on their iPhones were able to continue sending and receiving messages uninterrupted, though new downloads and app updates were completely blocked worldwide during the brief delisting window.

“We briefly removed Telegram from the App Store after our review found content that violates our strict guidelines prohibiting child sexual abuse material,” Apple confirmed. “The app was subsequently restored after the developer promptly removed the content and banned the user who posted it.”

Once the app reappeared on the App Store, Telegram chose to handle the situation with its signature online attitude. Taking to X, Telegram’s official account posted a cheeky reference to Mark Twain, writing, “reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated,” complete with a red apple emoji.

However, behind the lighthearted social media post lies a growing tension between the two companies regarding how app store rules are enforced. Telegram later pushed back on the optics of the situation, publicly questioning whether Apple intends to enforce these exact same moderation standards across every platform hosted in its digital store.

Telegram also noted that its internal moderation teams have already proactively shut down over 337,000 groups and channels linked to illegal material so far in 2026.

This isn’t the first time Telegram has found itself in Apple’s crosshairs. A similar delisting incident occurred back in 2018 over content moderation failures, which eventually forced Telegram to implement stricter filtering mechanisms for iOS users.
