Facebook-owned messaging service WhatsApp has reached a total of 700 million monthly active users. The news was unveiled by WhatsApp founder and CEO Jan Koum in a Facebook post last night.
This means that over 200 million users joined the messaging service since the Facebook acquisition. In the Facebook post, Koum said that users are sending more than 30 billion messages per day. Here is Koum’s full Facebook post:
“I hope you all had a happy and peaceful holiday season. Today, we’re thrilled to share that WhatsApp has more than 700 million monthly active users. Additionally, every day our users now send over 30 billion messages. As humbled and excited as we are by these numbers and our continued growth, we’re even more excited to keep building a great product in 2015. Most of all, we’re grateful that so many of you are using WhatsApp to stay in touch with your friends and family, business colleagues and classmates. We promise to continue working hard to make WhatsApp even better.”
Last February, Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerburg announced that his company was purchasing the messaging service for $19 billion. Zuckerburg’s vision is for WhatsApp to be the messaging service that connects 4 to 5 billion people within the next five years.
WhatsApp for iOS is available as a free download from the App Store. The service is free to use for the first year, then a $1 per year subscription is required to continue using the app.

i am baffled how WA is so popular. It’s just a text messaging service with no VOIP capabilities….worst of all, it’s only free for a year. There’ so many better free alternatives like Line, WeChat, Google Hangouts, Viber, and more.
