‘Modern Combat 5: Blackout’ Goes from $5 to Freemium in Latest Update

Gameloft has continued to shift its titles to the freemium model, with Modern Combat 5: Blackout being the latest. Formerly, this game was $5.79 CAD in the App Store but now it’s ‘free’ to play.

For users that purchased the game before this Spring update, they get some ‘perks’ such as a veteran killsign and weapon camo, to distinguish themselves from free players. These ‘veterans’ also get 200 extra credits after the update and for two weeks, get 25% extra XP boosters, weapons, score boosters, higher chances of supply pack drops and more, part of which Gameloft says “is our way of showing our appreciation to everyone who purchased the game.”

As for new freemium users, they will have an energy bar that depletes as they play the game, with energy being restored by waiting or watching videos.

This update comes with mixed reviews, as previous paying customers now have to contend with the game being free, when it first launched without in-app purchases. If you’ve always wanted to try this game now, now is your chance for ‘free’.

Not a fan of Freemium and feel sorry for people who paid for a full game experience but are now getting a game full of IAP.. if you look at the glass half full view, it will allow kids to get away from their screens for a while and then come back once the energy bar replenishes,,,
