Today, Telus announced that it has invested $1.4 million to bring wireless service to 42 kilometers of Highway 29 between Hudson’s Hope and the Highway 97 Junction in Fort St. John, British Columbia.

The Canadian wireless carrier has partnered with the Province to bring wireless service to Fort St. John’s near Bear Flat (about 18km of coverage) and the area to the east and west of Farrell Creek (about 24km of coverage). General manager at Telus Lance MacDonald said:

“Together, these new wireless sites provide a significant stretch of new coverage along a well-travelled section of Highway 29. Along with making travel safer by providing access to 911, these new sites give travellers the ability to make hands-free calls to connect with family and friends, or document a fun road trip in social media.”

Member of the Legislative Assembly for Peace River North Pat Pimm said:

“These new sites will help improve the safety for travellers along this part of Highway 29 by improving access to 911 and emergency services. Having wireless service along this stretch of highway will also help connect communities, residents and travellers in this region “

The investment comes as a part of a 10-year $2.8 billion project, which is set to unfold over the next ten years, to bring wireless service to over 1,700 kilometers of highway.

Telus will be working hard to expand its infrastructure and expand the reach of its wireless service with this project-wide initiative, with the planned completion date set for 2016.
