The market demand for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus remains strong if we are to believe Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, but analysts have already started talking about the next-generation models due this fall. Trendforce analysts add their voice to the mix, pointing to possible configurations of the iPhone 6s (via GforGames).
First, mass production will start in June, while shipments are scheduled for the third quarter and projected to reach 24 million units quarterly, except the fourth quarter, when Trendforce project more than 50 million units. The iPhone 6s is expected to represent more than 35% of this year’s total iPhone shipments. That, on the other hand, is said to surpass 230 million, a 20% growth year-over-year.
We’ve already heard rumours about a DRAM upgrade from LPDDR3 to LPDDR4, and to 2 GB. What’s more interesting, though, and was has already been rumoured, is that Apple may scrap the 16 GB model and raise the minimum storage capacity to 32 GB based on TLC NAND flash. This part is interesting, because there were some issues with the TLC NAND flash, as reported by Business Korea, and Apple reportedly stopped the use of its current TLC NAND flash chip and moved to Samsung.
Besides reiterating the Force Touch feature, Trendforce points to an interesting addition of the next-generation iPhone: a smaller LED backlight for a lighter and thinner body.
The iPhone 6s is expected to launch this fall, although there have been whispers about a possible August launch. Well, before then we have another Apple event, the WWDC 2015, which is scheduled to kick off on June 8.

There were two big things keeping me from getting an iPhone 6: not having camera optical image stabilization unless I went with the 6 Plus, and the insultingly low 16 GB storage capacity of the entry models of both 6 and 6 Plus, which hasn’t changed since my first iPhone, the 3GS, in 2009.
The entry level iPhone 6 should have been 32 GB. As I was upgrading from a 32 GB iPhone 5, 16GB was too little and 64 was too much, but I had no choice to spend more money and get the 64. The huge gap from 16 to 64 is embarrassing.
64 too much?! You’re lucky! With all my music, Apps, pictures and videos my 64 is full.
This is an old rumour even before Samsung did the same thing. The capacities should be (in a perfect world) 64GB, 128GB, 256GB
64gb works perfectly for me. 16gb is insultingly low. Also, regulators should get involved with these data capacity advertisements. It’s not 16gb when the non-swapable and dictated OS takes up nearly half of the actual space.
