Code in Sixth OS X El Capitan Beta Hints at 4K iMacs

Right after Apple seeded OS X El Capitan beta 2 earlier in June, developers found code references to a 4K, 21.5-inch Retina iMac. Fast forward to today, and French site Consomac (via MacRumors) has found that the sixth beta of OS X El Capitan released the other day includes a few lines of code that corroborate the earlier rumour of a 21.5-inch iMac upgrade.

Apple, of course, is silent on the matter, but the reports come right after well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s forecast of an iMac refresh by the end of September. Kuo, however, doesn’t specifically mention a Retina display, just display and CPU enhancements scheduled for the next-generation iMac that Apple will launch soon.

After digging into the code of the new OS X beta, Consomac found three new files. Of those, two include screen resolutions suggesting a 5K iMac refresh, but the biggest discovery is in the third file: a screen resolution of 4096 × 2304 pixels.

The file could be a strong hint toward a new Retina iMac with 4K display, a machine that would mean another milestone in Apple’s effort to upgrade its Mac computers with high-resolution screens.
