Plex Plans to Launch App for Apple TV

You soon could be using an official version of Plex on Apple TV, thanks to Apple’s new tvOS, which enables developers to create apps for the new entertainment device. According to ITWorld, Scott Olechowski, the co-founder of Plex, said in an interview he’s ready to “have a crack” at bringing their app to Apple TV users:

“We are very excited to have a crack at bringing our users Apple TV. It’s been a long requested platform and we’re excited to work on it. We want it, our users want it…and we’re anxiously awaiting the tvOS developer beta info, so we can finally dig in.”

Olechowski went on to say “There is no question we will be able to offer Plex on the platform. There are multiple ways to go about it, based on the tvOS SDK we now have access to.” He says being able to access iOS frameworks on Apple TV is a good thing for developers and predicts the new device “will be a top platform for us.”

The co-founder went on to say as of now, he doesn’t see anything that could prevent Plex developers from having apps on Apple TV, such as Apple intervention of their app.

It remains to be seen how Apple will embrace media server services like Plex, which organizes your music, video and photo collections. If developers have access to Siri, it could make apps like Plex equally as powerful in allowing users to search their own content by voice.

It’d be nice if their PS4 app didn’t require having a PLUS paid membership to use.

So does this mean I can hook up an external drive and watch my media on Apple TV?
