YouTube Red Launching for $9.99/Month, iOS Users Pay More [US Only]
Google-owned YouTube announced YouTube Red today, a new service that will offer ad-free versions of all available YouTube videos alongside exclusive content from some of the top creators and access to music streaming. Of course, this comes at a price: $9.99 per month, starting October 28. The service is currently limited to the US.
“Consumers are embracing paid subscriptions for ad-free content at an incredible pace,” Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s chief business officer, said at a press event in Los Angeles Wednesday. “[This] marks an evolution in our desire to give fans more choice and features that they love.”
Subscribers will be able to save YouTube videos for offline viewing, listen to videos while multitasking, and access Google Play Music and a new app called YouTube Music, which offers a Pandora-like experience. Of course, there will be an ad-supported free version of both apps if you aren’t willing to pay that monthly fee.
The fact is, during the past decade (or more), YouTube has become the place to go to for free videos. Now, as it has become a huge repository of videos, Google wants to make it profitable — despite generating $4 billion in revenue over the past year, the WSJ says YouTube isn’t profitable-
Now, for same price you pay for a Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video, or Hulu subscription, you can get two services — a music and video subscription.
YouTube Red will be available on Android, desktop, and mobile web for $9.99 per month (you can try it for free for one month). iOS users will have to pay over $12.99, however, due to Apple’s 30% cut.

You’re also getting Google Music included in that $10.
You get Spotify for free as a Rogers and Fido customer. Plus you get Spotify for free with ads as well as Apple Music for free for three months. Google Play Music is not an incentive if you’re using Apple products.
“Free” with Rogers – when I called to inquire I would have had to change my plan from my loyalty plan effectively paying $9 more per month, so more than a premium Spotify membership.

Exactly. These subscription services are the biggest rip ever. I guess there is a sucker born every minute.
That doesn’t make any sense. What about after the 3 months of apple music is up? Both are subscription music services and you either find value in them or not. The only time GPM is not an incentive is if you already pay for a different music service.
I already subscribe to GPM so when it comes to canada I’ll be happy to go ad free (officially, so it doesn’t break every 6 months) for no extra cost.
That is the a load of BS. You don’t get Spotify for free with Rogers – funny how you don’t specify what is required.

Apple takes 30% from the app store, but surely they could offer subscription services via web as Spotify does?
I’m sure that iOS users can subscribe directly with YouTube for $10 and then simply login on the iOS app. No need to buy a subscription from the App Store.
I thought YouTube Red was an adult only subscription lol.
