Facebook Messenger Testing Snapchat-Like Disappearing Messages in France
Facebook has started testing out new disappearing messages that will self-destruct an hour after they are sent, like Snapchat.
The social networking giant has previously tried to build an entirely separate Snapchat competitor, called Slingshot, which seems to have failed miserably. However, the company seems to be looking to try again with the disappearing messages feature in Facebook Messenger.
If the feature is available, users will see a small egg-timer pop up in the top-right corner of their messages, next to the information button. Pressing the button turns it on, and will mean that anything that gets sent will self-destruct.
For now, the feature has only been enabled for select uses in France, but the company seemed to indicate that it would roll out for more users if it is successful. The feature currently only seems to be available within the app and not on the desktop, however, the messages will also be deleted from the desktop if someone is talking there.
