Rogers, TELUS Offer Free Calls/Texts to Fort McMurray; Bell Donates $100K [u]

The scenes from Fort McMurray look straight out of a horror movie, as forest fires continue to ravage the city, and residents continue to flee the area.

Rogers and TELUS are assisting the situation by offering free calls and texts to and from the area, along with their sub-brands Fido and Koodo. TELUS and Koodo note free calls and texts will last until May 17.

TELUS says those able to find one of their payphones can dial ‘0’ and get free calls in Canada.

Rogers and Bell have also each donated $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to help rescue and recovery efforts.

UPDATE: The federal government has announced all personal donations made by Canadians to the Red Cross will be matched by Ottawa

  • Text the word REDCROSS to number 45678 for a $10 donation
  • Text the word REDCROSS to number 30333 for a $5 donation
  • Text the word FIRES to number 45678 to donate $10 to Alberta Fires Emergency Appeal

I was thinking the same thing. It’s pathetic really considering Bell’s profits, although it’s not quite the insult that was offered up by Rogers & Telus.

Surprised there isn’t a clause that says you must be on a Share Everything plan to get the free calls and texts.

They still have plans without free long distance?

Definitely… Like older grandfathered plans with lots of data, before they realized people wanted data more than voice calls across the country, and started screwing people over new contracts

100K? Big deal. Rogers is a multi billion dollar company. They should have donated 10 million at least. Drop in the bucket for Rogers.
