iPhone 7 Once Again Rumoured to Sport a “Force Touch Home Button”
Following up on earlier rumours claiming Apple would drop the home button as we know it with the iPhone 7 this fall, Business Insider cites analysts at Cowen and Company saying that’s indeed the case. They arrived at this conclusion after checking their sources in Apple’s supply chain.
The next generation iPhone will likely drop the physical button in favour of a “force touch” home button, the analysts say. Since it includes a haptic engine inside, when pressed, the home button will provide the sensation that it is physically depressed.
The technology is similar to what we’ve seen with the Force Touch trackpad that Apple’s new MacBooks include.
While the track record of Cowen and Company is mixed, it is worth noting that the report corroborates earlier claims from Digitimes and a sketchy image that allegedly showed the new home button.
Although various sources seem to point to the same direction, this claim should be taken with a grain of salt until more evidence surfaces.
The iPhone 7 is expected to launch this fall and it is claimed to feature a slightly thinner, waterproof body with no headphone jack and possibly wireless charging. There is also word on the street that Apple could finally drop the entry level 16GB version with the 32 GB model — that storage option will be discontinued with the iPhone 6.

I just wished they would get rid of the home button all-together and relocate it to the side. It takes up too much real-estate which could be used to extend the screen.
Where would they put the TouchID sensor then? I agree it’s taking a lot of space, but I prefer to have it on the front than on the back like some Android phones.
They can embed the TouchID fingerprint sensors right into the display itself. Apple has already filed patents on this technology, it’s now just a matter of implementing it. The antiquated 2007 home button is really getting long in the tooth.
