Rogers announced today it will be launching its Ignite Gigabit Internet service in Ottawa on Canada Day.

Ignite Gigabit offers download speeds of up to 1Gbps and upload speeds of up to 50Mbps. Rogers main competitor in the area is Bell, which already offers gigabit internet service in Ottawa at the same price.

In a statement, Executive Vice President of Rogers Residential Services Kelly Atkinson said:

“Rogers Ignite Gigabit Internet is ideal for these connected households with multiple devices – at top speeds, customers can download an HD movie in less than 30 seconds, a full album in less than one second, and a game in about five minutes. Customers get even more value when they combine our fastest unlimited Internet with our great cable and home phone offers.”

In a statement, President and CEO of Ottawa’s Chamber of Commerce said:

“Driven by capital-region activities in federal politics and tourism, Ottawa offers great opportunities for small business owners. Gigabit Internet speeds will give local small businesses a competitive edge in the digital economy.”

Rogers will be rolling out its fastest Internet speeds across neighbourhoods in the nation’s capital starting on July 1st for $149.99 per month. Rogers’ plan is to deliver gigabit internet service to over four million homes by the end of 2016.

Their gigabit service is 1 Gb/s not 1 GB/s. Big difference.

I am already happy with 250 mbps, some spots struggle to even get that full amount (60mbps with wifi) in my home

So this package “wasn’t available” in my area a couple weeks ago when they had the unadvertised promo on for $99… but now since it’s back to full price it all of a sudden is available. Very convenient… for Rogers…
