2017 iPhone to Feature “All-Glass” Casing with Metal Frame: KGI
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is ‘back at it again’ with another report on what Apple has planned for the 2017 iPhone.

The latest note issued to investors, obtained by MacRumors, reiterates a previous rumour from this spring, when he said next year’s iPhone would have an all-glass design, similar to the days of the iPhone 4/4S, but have slightly curved displays.
He notes a metal frame, either stainless steel (for a high-end model) or aluminum, will be employed along the edges to help reinforce new glass front and backs:
Metal frame can be stainless steel or aluminum, with former more likely for high-end models. As all-glass casing is not possible at present given technological bottlenecks, a metal frame surrounding the edge is necessary for reinforced structure design. As stainless steel has a better look than aluminum and costs more, we expect only high-end new iPhone models to come with a stainless steel frame next year.
This spring, Kuo issued a similar note, where he explained next year’s iPhone would have a 5.8-inch AMOLED curved glass display, on top of existing 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models.
A separate report from Nikkei earlier this year, cited CEO of Catcher Technology, an Apple supplier, saying at least one iPhone model next year would have an all-glass body. Earlier this month, the New York Times said next year’s iPhone would have a “full screen face” with embedded Home button.
Kuo said in his report “we see glass casing as the only option” for Apple, as a way to differentiate itself from competitors next year and for better production yield rates, citing the “unsatisfactory” Jet Black finish, which has been the cause of iPhone 7 delays.
If Kuo is accurate–which he has been consistently–we could be heading back to the iPhone days of all-glass everything (errthang). Better have a case, folks.
Update: For those inquiring, here are some ‘predictions’ by Kuo this year, which turned out to be eerily accurate:

Gary can you pull up all the articles from a year ago claiming what the iphone will be and then list wich predictions were true and which were false.
I’m curious because seems like these “leaks” are always wrong
considering that the next iPhone is still a year away, anything at this point is mere speculation. But the best explanation / guess I’ve seen so far on what the next iPhone may be made of is this one:

Pft. Where have you been? The difference between rumours vs fact from reputable sources have been very negligible in recent years. Keep up or move to the end of the class.
I prefer the view from back here anyway.
I’ve updated the article to list the predictions made this year by Kuo for iPhone 7. He nailed it again.
ok I stand corrected, thank you
Speaking of cases, have you got any insider info on which cases for the 7+ are fairly good in terms of protection and drop proof? Perhaps a future blog/tweet?
If I remember correctly, most of his accurate predictions occurred when the iPhone 7 was about 2 months from release.
“High end” is becoming synonymous with “enormous.” I kinda hate being punished with features and build quality just because I don’t want a phablet. But hey, what am I gonna do? Buy a 2 year old SE in fall 2017?
Who knows, maybe the SE will get an update next year as well.
The New York Times, however, is wrong. There is absolutely no way it will have a “full screen face” (like the picture suggests).
It’s been widely and reputably rumoured for many months now the 2017 iPhone will be a huuuuge change. It will have a glass screen and wireless charging just to name a few. However, the camera will still be meh. Many of us are keeping (or at least trying to) keep their 2016 iPhone in mint condition and sell it next time this year to get the 2017 iPhone. However, let’s just hope it and the current iPhones won’t explode if it has any Samsung components in it.
