Spotify Says an Apple TV App Isn’t Coming Anytime Soon

There’s an Apple Music app on Apple TV 4, but what about Spotify? Will there ever be a tvOS app for the streaming music service?

Apple Music’s biggest competitor has noted on GitHub (via App Advice), they have “down prioritized” a Spotify tvOS app, saying “you should not expect a release supporting it any time soon. I’m sorry about that,” according to Samuel Erdtman, Product Owner at Spotify.

There’s no word why Spotify has changed its stance on a tvOS app, when the iOS app is widely available. For Spotify, and other streaming music services, the name of the game is to offer music from any device, no matter where you are. The lack of Apple TV 4 support definitely seems like a strange one.

Anyone out there waiting for Spotify to launch on tvOS?

Well that really blows. I love Spotify and really would love to add it to my Apple TV.

I wonder if it’s a purely internal decision or if Apple really doesn’t want a Spotify app on the Apple TV.

I would think it a relatively trivial amount of work to port the existing iOS app, so I wonder if that’s an issue.

Luckily the AirPlay capability in iOS works flawlessly, save a lag when starting and stopping music playing, so it’s not a big deal. But I was looking forward to having a native app on the Apple TV.

Not a bad interim solution, but it’s not without its drawbacks – battery drain on the phone, inability to use the iphone for other audio/video while playing music, disconnection if the wifi signal is weak, etc. It would seem pretty easy for Spotify to develop a TVOS app that would edge in to Apple Music’s natural advantage of having its app more deeply ingrained to the breadth of Apple hardware.
