Ordered 13″ MacBook Pro with touch bar basic model. Delivers 21 Nov – 25 Nov to Toronto. Unfortunately I won’t be here so I’ll ask someone to DHL me. Unless Apple ships next week but I doubt it.

Almost $6000 after tax for a MacBook with only 16GB RAM? Apple dropped the ball with this presentation. Really disappointed…

“Only” 16 GB of RAM? What are you doing to max out 16 GB of RAM?

I’ve been maxing out 16gb ram since 2011. 3D rendering, compositing, motion graphics, and other video post work can eat through that easy.

Try Photoshop and Premiere or Photoshop and After Effects, and you’ll see RAM becomes a problem.

Ok, now go spec out a any other competitors machine with similar specs. That’s the price of getting the best.

Do you really need the Processor bump to 2.9? Lol

That’s exactly what I found. I checked out the Dell XPS because it’s getting rave reviews. And to be sure, it looks like a great machine. I figure if I can save a few hundred, I’d go with it.

With 16GB RAM and 1 TB SSD, it was $3,199; with my workplace Apple EPP store, I spent $3,073 on the MacBook Pro. If I’m spending that kind of money, I at least want the unparalleled support of Apple.

No, both of those prices are pre-tax. 🙁 Ridiculous I know, but I bit the bullet and got the upgrades to RAM and SSD because that should really last me for quite a few years.

I agree with upgrading to your taste to last the test of time. My macbook air is still very capable and I’m still kicking myself for only getting 128gb hard drive. Ain’t making this mistake this time…

What people forget is that with this MBP it should last you 10 years if configured properly

Same here. I have the Air with 256GB drive. In terms of speed and function, it’s actually still perfect. I’ve not noticed any real slowdown. But I’m tired of the low-res screen and now everything I do means deleting something to make room. I figure the 16GB RAM and 1TB drive on this purchase will pretty much do me until the machine (or I) die! The way Macs last, I wouldn’t take bets on which that will be. LOL

So, yeah, incredibly pricey, but when you amortize it out over how long I’ll likely have this thing, it’ll probably work out cheaper than a less expensive Windows machine. Most of those I’ve had I wanted to throw through the window after a year or two they get so bogged down and glitchy.

No iMac, no Mac Pro, no Mac Mini? That the heck Apple?

OUCH, what is with the giant price hike?! The base model 13″ MBP w/TouchBar is the same price as the 15″ MBP I bought in 2008, and the 15″ MBP is now $3,000, outrageous!! If my memory is correct it’s up $500 from the last model? Very sad. As a pro user I am seriously lost on what to do, my 2008 MBP has served me very well over the years, but it’s now starting to have hardware issues. Upgrading is becoming a more difficult decision each iteration of their products; can’t upgrade ram, can’t replace the hard drive, no more MagSafe, can’t replace the battery, and these new models are overpriced as hell. I don’t make $600,000 a year and Apple has priced themselves completely out of reach.

I’d like to point out that the entry level 15in MBP is the same price as the previous one so it’s the way to go. I ordered that one with the 1tb upgrade and yes I took a huge hit on the upgrade at $700… But other than that they are not too bad imho

Same model is a $400 hike in the USA and no difference here so I’m happy

Depends what you are looking for. I wasn’t dropping my 1TB hard drive so that made it within $400 of the 13in model. To me $400 was worth it as you get the bigger screen, i7 cpu and better graphics.

Hard to say best bang for buck but the second tier 13in with 16gb upgrade is not bad at all but again you are $600 to the 15in. Because of the big price increase on the 13in, I’d recommend a 15in quite frankly, we are talking a few hundred box apart.

Just to clarify, what do you mean the entry level one is same price as the previous one? The new 15″ 2016 MBP starts at $2999 for the entry model (2.6ghz I7 with 256gb SSD). The older 15″ MBP I believe started at $2449, which they’re still selling today at $2449 (ie. the same price).

But to be clear, that $2449 is not the new 2016 MBP, it’s the old one (ie. Will still have Intel Haswell chips).

I looked the day before the keynote and wrote them down as I wanted to compare and I say $2,999 on 15in entry level

Hmm, I recall the entry level (with Intel integrated graphics) was more in the $2400 range? Maybe the $2,999 was for the discrete graphics cards version (which is now only version available for the new 15″)?

Gary, do you know when the new machines will be in Apple stores to go try out? I’m not comfortable buying blind until I try out this supposed “2nd generation improved” butterfly keyboard. I despise the one on the 12″ MacBook and I won’t pay this kind of money for something with that keyboard.

I was dying to upgrade my 2012 15″ rMBP. Sadly, I will continue to wait. Hopefully there will be some real innovation with Intel Kaby Lake. This feels like an interim update. The touch bar seems like a gimmick. Doing away with magsafe is a step in the wrong direction. Just underwhelming over all. This is the first time I’ve ever felt like that on a Mac redesign.

Agreed. For the record though, Kaby Lake isn’t really much different from Skylake. The 15″ model actually has the latest Intel processor available for that size (asa quad core configuration), but the 13″ macbook pro could have gone with 7th gen (Kaby Lake) processors.

In the grander scheme though, if you have a 15″ with an i7 processor, there’s really no benefit to upgrading anyway. These are poor designs for what should be a “pro” configuration and way, way too expensive for what we would be getting.

Underwhelming is right.

You’re right Kaby Lake is not going to be a huge step up. Usually one should skip 1st gen Apple hardware anyway. Hoping they bring back magsafe at least.

Seems like an iterative update with a bit of de-contenting and a gimmicky touch bar thrown in for the show-if-off bling factor.
Still wishing they would release a 15″ macbook under $2000. I would think the market for people who just want a bigger display but don’t necessarily need the beefed up internals that accompany it would be fairly large.

the bar makes sense and is a nice addition (just from looking at, still have to try it though). I REALLY agree with your second point about a 15″ macbook thats less beefed up…I was really hoping for a 15″ macbook air that with slightly better specs than the 13″macbook air and sell it for ~1699$!! would buy that real quick. I have been waiting for them to release a 15″ MBA, but looks like they will never do it. Quick point that the new 13″ macbook Pro (no touch bar) still costs 1900$!! but still why didnt they have 15″ MBP with no touch bar @ ~2600$.

Congrats! Nice upgrade. I looked hard at all three upgrades but decided not to get any. I guess I should consider the 512gb hard drive an update I guess.
I now have a 2009 MacBook Pro. So I expect to be blown away at the difference, other than the price difference I mean. Bought this one for $2000. So the price has virtually doubled. Although none of us should forget our dollar has taken a 25% dive since then.

FYI the entry 15″ IS basically the same model. Look at the ram speed and CPU choice. It’s a steal if you want a lower spec’d MBP that’s just kept aging at the same price.

It’s close for sure. I wanted to go up from the 256gb I have now. That was one of my main wants. I knew that the upgrades would be relatively light. Their basic machine is really all most of us need. I wanted more space for music. I don’t like to overfill the hard drive. I also don’t like having a lot of music in the cloud. I like it close and handy. It’s fine for backup though.

Buy an SSD for it if you haven’t already. That made a massive difference to mine – way more than when I upgraded ram. You can stick your original drive in the CD slot and put the CD drive in a USB enclosure.

Thanks for the advice. I actually did change the hard drive long time ago to SSD. When I got the RAM I maxed it out to 16GB and I’m noticing a huge different. I still had the base 4 GB in it lol. Now it’s flying.

I had been waiting for this all year (thought they’d be released at WWDC). Ordered the 13″ MBP with Touchbar, 16gb ram (think you need this to future-proof), and 512gb SSD. Got my order in early, so getting delivered week of Nov 21-25.

I thought the touchbar would be gimmicky from the rumors, but I thought the demos yesterday actually showed how useful it can be. IMO it’s a nice solution to get many of the benefits of a touchscreen, but keeping it on the keyboard level (so you don’t have to move your hands from keyboard to screen).

Good call on the 16GB RAM, I did the same. 8GB of RAM on my current 2012 MBA is barely cutting it.

I’m surprised there’s no 32GB RAM option for the 15-inch model and only 16GB.

Chris Kim

Agreed – I thought for sure they’d offer the option (at least on 15″ as you say).

In terms of HD space – I already have a 5TB WD Black in an external enclosure (USB3), so I thought the upgrade price to 1TB was too steep (massive “Apple tax” on that upgrade), and 512gb seemed like the nice compromise. +$250, enough for on-the-go, and whenever I’m at home, will likely be docked into a USB-C port, where I can access the external HD.

Never buy a mac at retail price. Anyone can get an educational discount. In this case it costs 2169.00 for the 13″ touch bar model, saving you $130. Do that and get a pst free friend in Alberta to ship it to you and you’ll save anywhere from $230 to $330 depending on your provincial pst rate.

Salinger

Many workplaces (mine included) have an EPP store set up with Apple which gives essentially the same pricing as the educational discount.

The Alberta work-around is a good idea if you’re up for it; not bothered to arse around with that myself.
