Torstar to Funnel Millions of Dollars into Failing Star Touch Tablet App

Despite failing to gain attention from its users, the Star Touch tablet app is receiving millions of dollars in funding from the company that owns the Toronto Star.

In a statement, Torstar Corp.’s acting president and publisher David Holland told analysts that “We [the company] remains committed to the initiative.” The app is growing at a slow rate, with a total of 55,000 to 60,000 weekly active readers. However, even with the current number of readers, the app will still not be able to generate the revenue the company expected.

The company spent $10.1 million in the first nine months of this year to try and revive the project. Torstar plans to spend another $1.5 million on the app in the fourth quarter of this year.

The Toronto Star is still one of the most distributed papers in Canada, and the company is hoping that a killer tablet app could help bring readership to new levels.

I actually really like the app but I don’t use our tablet often. It would be nice if they bought an app with a similar experience to the iPhone

The star app is so much better then their competition that is not even funny. I agree that they should try to bring it to their phone apps as well

I’m surprise it’s not growing faster…. since it’s based and produced by La Presse (design, functionalities, etc.). Because with La Presse, it’s a huge hit. This app for La Presse is so successful that they even dont produce the paper version anymore (only on Saturday).

I like the idea behind it but the layout doesnt seem very appealing on a tablet (on an iPhone maybe). And they left out the obits. I expected it to closer emulate the print edition like an ebook would. And yes they need to allow it to work on the iPhone as well.
