Twitter Usernames No Longer Count Toward 140 Character Limit Replies

Last year, Twitter announced it would roll out an update which would not count usernames toward the 140 character limit in replies. As of today, the changes are now going live, says the company.

Also changing today is the way how replies will appear. You will no longer see an @username when typing a reply, as it’ll now appear up above instead of in-line with your text. Groups of people you’re replying to will be noted above your text, which you can tap to expand to see who you’re responding to:

Twitter also says when you’re reading a conversation, “you’ll actually see what people are saying, rather than seeing lots of @usernames at the start of a Tweet.”

This is a nice change as before, replying to multiple people would shorten your 140 character limit. But I still would have liked to keep @usernames in the text portion when replying, as that makes it much easier to keep track of.

The social network says the update is rolling out now on Twitter.com, along with the company’s iOS and Android apps.
