Alan Applonie, from Tracy, California, was on his way to catch an early morning flight back home to when he realized he lost his brand new unlocked iPhone 7—and assumed it was gone forever.

But when he got home, his son said “Grandma called, and some guy from Montreal says he has your phone,” which took Applonie by surprise.

It turns out, his iPhone 7 was left in a Montreal taxi and his driver, named Hassan, was about to ship his iPhone back to Tracy (more than 3,000 miles away) via FedEx—for free. Applonie told CTV News he offered to reimburse Hassan the shipping charges, but the taxi driver refused, only to say the gesture was “my gift to you.”

The Montreal taxi driver, who only wanted to be identified as Hassan, refused to appear on camera, said “It would have been a burden” if he didn’t return the phone, as everyone has the temptation of wanting a new iPhone. He also turned down a reward, which Applonie then said he would donate $500 towards a charity of the taxi driver’s choice. Hassan said he would match any donation made in his name made by the California man.

Wow, the fact that this is news makes me not trust cabbies even more. It’s so freakishly unusual for a cabbie to return a phone that it gets international coverage!

Good for him though. A great example for us all.

Honesty is the best policy… no matter if you’re a cabbie or a CEO… Kudos to Hassan as well as Alan for donating to charity.. a good deed goes a long way!!!

Great story. Reminded me of the cabbie who returned my wife’s iPhone back at our hotel in Spain. We asked the hotel staff to text the address of our hotel and could see the phone making its way back on Find My Friends.
