Apple’s latest transparency report shows that the company saw a spike in government data requests in the second half of 2016. In the second half of 2016, the company saw more than 20,000 security requests, which is nearly double that of the first half of the year.
In addition, Apple reported receiving a National Security Letter (NSL) for the first time ever in its latest biannual transparency report. NSLs are common demands from the FBI for user data. Apple didn’t reveal the contents of the letter, only that it received one.
The report also revealed a decline in the total number of device-related requests for data from U.S. government agencies, from 4,822 in the first half of 2016 to 4,254 in the second.
