Nintendo launched its latest Switch hybrid gaming console earlier this year and now, a BusinessInsider report is claiming that the company is developing a miniature, inexpensive version of the original Nintendo 64 console. The company released a miniaturized version of its NES Classic Edition console in 2016, while a Super NES Classic Edition (SNES) is planned for launch later this year.
The source notes that although Nintendo has not officially announced that it will re-release a miniature of the original Nintendo 64, there are some clues in a recent European trademark filing from Nintendo, that point to just such a console being in the works. It is believed that company will launch a compact version of the original system and its gamepad at a sub-$100 price point, and a bunch of classic Nintendo 64 games built right into the console.
In the filing, a distinctive image is shown (above). The trademark image, discovered by gaming forum NeoGAF, isn’t just notable because it’s the outline of the Nintendo 64 gamepad — it’s notable because it’s the same outline of a gamepad that appears on the retail branding of Nintendo’s other “Classic Edition” consoles.
Nintendo filed the same logo trademark in Europe for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System gamepad silhouette, and that same silhouette appears on top of the Super NES Classic Edition box.

Goldeneye can stake claim to many hours of my childhood. 🙂
I’d get it in a heartbeat. The only problem is, my son is no longer eight, so now he’ll be out for revenge and will kick my a$$.
The only issue with an N64 classic is that, some of the best games for that generation were games using licenses not owned by Nintendo, I.e- goldeneye 007, perfect dark; so it is unlikely that we’ll see those titles included on the classic system unless Nintendo can somehow manage to convince the current license holders to jump on board. Further, the N64 represented the early years of 3D gaming, and I definitely have fond memories of many of the titles released at the time, but like many games from that generation, they have not aged well; blurry textures, low resolution, and poor frame rates were common in many of the titles for that system.
Mine still works, just need to save up $100 to get Super Smash Bros!!
