Fido, Koodo and Virgin Launch Simultaneous Double Data Promos

The flanker brands of Canada’s Big 3 wireless carriers, Fido, Koodo and Virgin, have launched simultaneous double data promos, seemingly timed for back to school.

Fido is offering the following (bonus data included below):

You should be calling Fido and asking for retention plans of $55/6GB and $75/10GB, as some customers have been getting them.

Koodo is offering the following double data promo:

  • $40 for 1GB
  • $55 for 2GB
  • $65 for 3GB
  • $85 for 6GB
  • Data overages: $5/100MB or $50/1GB

And here are the exact same offerings from Virgin Mobile:

  • $40 for 1GB
  • $55 for 2GB
  • $65 for 3GB
  • $85 for 6GB
  • Data overages: $7/100MB or $70/1GB

All these plans include either 500 or unlimited Canada-wide minutes, plus unlimited global SMS/MMS and other extras. There’s no explanation on how all three of these carriers have launched similar data promos–at the exact same time. Maybe it is related to the recent solar eclipse?

If your existing plan is worse than the above listed, call in and make the switch.

It nice that they can coordinate so closely. There are companies whose internal division aren’t able to work together as well as our carriers do.

You mistake my position, sir. I said it was nice that they collaborate.

Actual competition would be better than collaboration…

I used to work for one of the Big 3. It was explicit within our playbook that “we will never compete on price.” If a rival carrier launches a promotion, we just match it and call it a day.

In most cases I don’t believe it usually gets that far. I honestly believe they signal each other what promos are coming, if not outright cooperation on marketing.

Yawn. None of these come close to touching Public’s 4GB for $40.

A polite but frank discussion with further up the food chain recently with my Big 3 provider re: competitor’s prices – and they ‘found’ me a 4GB, unlimited Canada calling, unlimited international SMS / photo / video, visual voicemail, call waiting, name display for $55 – significantly less than what they were charging me for 3GB Plan.
Not seeing a ‘deal’ with the above at all.

It wasn’t simultaneously. Fido released this deal first followed by Virgin a few days later. Koodo was last to the party after reacting about 2 weeks after the fact. They did not release these at the same time. These plans have been out for at least 3 weeks now
