As legislation to dismiss the Manitoba Taxicab Board is just around the corner, Uber is getting really eager to launch in the province.
Data collected by Uber shows that more than 30,000 people opened the app in Winnipeg looking for a ride. Even though the ride-sharing company is operating in more than 40 cities in Canada, the company has been shut out of Manitoba due to provincial regulations.
Back in March, the Progressive Conservative government introduced a legislation that will eliminate the taxicab board. If the legislation passes, the municipalities will set the rules by which vehicle-for-hire operate in the province.
In an email. Uber Canada spokeswoman Susie Heath said:
“We look forward to continuing to work with the province of Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg to bring Uber to the province soon, so that Manitobans can benefit from another safe, reliable way to get around their communities and flexible income-earning opportunity.”
Many residents of Winnipeg will be ready to jump onboard the service as soon as it is able to legally operate in the province.
