According to a new report by The Korea Herald, Apple is believed to be working on a foldable OLED iPhone slated for a 2020 release, in partnership with LG Electronics (via MacRumors). The report claims that Apple has partnered with LG for this project in order to keep its future technology breakthroughs secret from chief rival Samsung.
The publication notes that LG has already created a “task force” to build a foldable OLED display for a future iPhone model, whereas LG Innotek has been tasked with creating a “rigid flexible printed circuit board”.
While the authenticity of the report cannot be guaranteed at this time, Apple’s design guru Jony Ive did however mention is a recent interview that Apple started working on the bezel-less iPhone X design 5 years ahead of its unveiling in September.
Wednesday’s report claims that LG created its own foldable OLED prototype two or three years ago. Since then, the company has worked on improving durability and production yields. An alleged partnership with LG is noteworthy given that Samsung is currently the world’s premier OLED maker. Apple’s iPhone X is believed to feature displays solely from Samsung, as rival OLED panels from the likes of LG weren’t up to snuff.
Meanwhile, Samsung is also believed to be readying its own foldable display handset for launch in 2018.
