Steve Wozniak Says He Won’t Buy the iPhone X at Launch

In an interview with CNBC at the Money 20/20 conference, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has revealed the he’s not going to buy the iPhone X on launch day, saying that he is happy with his iPhone 8, “which is the same as the iPhone 7, which is the same as the iPhone 6”, to him. “For some reason, the iPhone X is going to be the first iPhone I didn’t — on day one — upgrade to. But my wife will, so I’ll be close enough to see it.”

Although Woz didn’t offer a specific reason for his lack of interest in the iPhone X, it’s possible he just doesn’t think it’s worth another upgrade this year. He also worries that Face ID, the new 3D face-scanning technology which will replace the Touch ID fingerprint scanner on the iPhone X, might not work perfectly at launch.

Wozniak also said he was skeptical that the Face ID feature would work the way it is supposed to. But he isn’t the only onlooker who’s uncertain about the new handset. Because the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X were not released at the same time this year, some analysts have struggled to get a handle on how well the phones will sell.

Venture capitalist Gene Munster has noted that Google searches for “iPhone” seem to have declined 10% year over year, although his firm’s surveys show “positive data points for Apple”.

Below is a clip from Wozniak’s interview with CNBC.

Hey, you need to tone down your vitriol towards people, nobody wants to read this stuff. Don’t want to moderate comments, but we will to keep things civil around here. Cheers

I think the post would have been better if it offered some facts. A 256GB iPhone X is US$1,149 while a McRib goes for about US$2.99 when available. Therefore one could buy 384 McRibs – more than one/day for a year for the same price. There. Now we all learned something.

While I certainly respect Woz’s opinion, he has a luxury none of us have. He can get the 8 or 8 Plus now, and whenever he decides he wants an X, he knows he just has to say, and he’ll get one.

For the rest of us, if we purchase the 8 or 8 Plus, that’s our phone budget done for the year. Also, at whatever point he may decide he wants an X, he will undoubtedly get one immediately. If we don’t get up early and pre-order at the first possible moment, then a few weeks later by the time we say we’re ready to get one, it’ll likely be months before we’d get our hands on one if all the stories are to be believed.

Oh yes, I’m sure you’re right that he does buy them himself. I just mean a) he is a multi-millionaire, so buying an 8 or 8+ and then buying an X a few weeks later would mean nothing to him and b) if Steve Wozniak lets it be known he wants to buy an iPhone X, you can be 100% certain, he’s going to have one made available to him on the spot. Unlike you or I who would have to wait weeks or months. 🙂

i picked the 8 over the X as well. i think that the first version of anything should be avoided at all costs.

Can’t agree more. I know how inconvenient it is to lift the phone to your face just to unlock. I’m sure that TouchID will return once technology to implement it on-screen becomes available.

Look at iPhone 4’s antenna gate and iPhone 6 Plus’ bendgate, and first gen of new Macbook problems. People never learn – Avoid first gen Apple products at all costs!

I’m happy with my iPhone 8 Plus. It’s a big enough change from my previous iPhone 6s.

If he just got an 8, it would make no sense to get an X. If his wife is getting one, that’s going to be enough experience with the two. My phones work pretty well and so does my wife’s…no need to put down anyone or anything. Yes, the iPhone X is spearheading some new features, so it is wise to let them get the kinks out of it. That’s true with nearly any manufacturer, not just apple.
