We currently use the Schlage Sense for our front door and it’s amazing. We can control the lock while we’re away, thanks to our Apple TV 4 acting as a home hub (it sits about 30 feet away). What makes this model nice is you have touch controls plus keys too as a backup. The only downside is the lock motor can be loud, but overall it’s not that bad.

I had bought this earlier this year but it wasn’t able to fit well on my door. I would have had to do some adjustments on my door in order to get it to work. Too much hassle. Plus I don’t like the 4 battery thing.
I have this same lock. Another downside/concern I have with it is the keypad being so distinctive over a regular deadbolt. If and when these are cracked, it basically advertising “Come on in”. Clearly not enough to persuade me not to buy one but a concern nonetheless.
firmware will fix any security issue… unless it’s an hardware problem.
Maybe, maybe not. If it’s the Bluetooth stack itself that gets compromised it could take a very long time to release a patch. Same if it’s something specific to Schlage’s implementation.
Well at least you can setup customize PINs beyond 4-digits long. As for the firmware updates, they do need to make it more obvious where to tap to update firmware, as the menu just shows the version number (unless you see the push alert a new firmware update is available). Regardless, I like the automation of tapping ‘unlock’ on my Apple Watch when pulling up to the house, which unlocks the front door.
Yup, I use 6 digit pins. Won’t help if they firmware/comms stack is compromised.
Does that work for you with your Apple Watch? I find I still have to unlock my iPhone before the door will actually unlock.
It was working before a recent iOS 11 update, then the alerts stopped coming. I’ve set them up again and they should work again. But yeah, I was able to tap ‘unlock’ on my Apple Watch’ and it would unlock the front door without requiring my iPhone to be unlocked as well.
I bought this a few months ago… this is really the best home kit accessory I have in my house! My wife wasn’t convinced at all when I first installed it… but now she really likes it!
I agree it’s a great lock!
I find Yale locks to be much better quality
Does this use Bluetooth to communicate with the Apple TV4? My apple TV4 is one floor up and on the opposite side of the house, so bluetooth won’t work. I’d get it in a flash if it used wifi to connect to the apple TV or to my home wifi network. Does anyone know another product that uses wifi rather than bluetooth? thanks
I set up my old ipad 2 mini as a hub and the Apple TV 4th gen is listed as connected and the ipad2 mini as Stand by. So it looks like 2 hubs are allowed but only one is connected and the other is standby? Is there any way to make both connected? I am hope to extend the bluetooth range because I could have the ipad 2 mini closer to the front door within it’s bluetooth range. Any ideas, suggestions? thanks
So I found the wifi alternative – Schlage BR400 sense wifi adaptor, but apparently it’s not available in Canada yet. It’s also not homekit compatible and it costs around US$69. It plugs into the wall near the door and gives the lock wifi and internet connection without the bluetooth.
So as I said before, I had problem with bluetooth, since my AppleTV as a hub would not connect to my front door because of the distance.
So I switched to my old iPad 2 mini as a hub and it worked great as hub with my 3 koogeek appliances. So I ordered the Schlage Sense lock on this sale, it arrived and I got it installed yesterday and it works great with the iPad 2 mini as a hub and I disconnected the Apple TV as a hub. However, I did have a major problem. Right after I paired it to my iPhone, it wanted to install firmware update, so I let it install it and it finished successfully, but all hell broke loose when it restarted the lock, it would not successfully connect or lock or unlock, it was unusable. It also was suggesting more firmware updates, but there were none since it installed the latest one. So out of desperation, I deleted the lock in my home app, it did it but did not initiate the setup sequence, it did not properly delete everything and install the default codes. So I followed the user manual to manually delete it by disconnecting the battery, pressing the outside Schlage button and reconnecting the battery and I tested the default combination and it was properly restored and worked with the default code on the keypad. So I paired it again and everything worked fine and it will works now. It also works with my iPad mini, iphone and Apple watch.
Schlage sells wifi adaptor in the US, not in Canada yet, but it is not Home Kit compatible and it looks like I won’t need it.
