Ontario Smart Thermostat Program Offers $100 Rebate on Nest, Ecobee

The Green Ontario Fund, an agency of the Government of Ontario, has launched a $100 rebate when residents purchase an eligible smart thermostat from Nest and Ecobee.

Using a smart thermostat to control your home heating and cooling makes it easy to reduce your carbon footprint. If you live in Ontario, you could receive a $100 rebate for purchasing an eligible smart thermostat.

The program says if you live in a home, condo or apartment unit in Ontario, you are eligible as long as your heating and cooling system is compatible. Renters must receive consent from landlords to participate.

The following smart thermostats are eligible for the $100 rebate (you can purchase them online or from a store):

Ecobee

  • ecobee4 (HomeKit, Alexa supported): $329
  • ecobee3 Lite (Alexa supported): $197.98
  • ecobee3 (HomeKit, Alexa supported): $219 ($80 off on Amazon.ca)

Nest

How the program works is first, you purchase one of the listed thermostats and install it, then submit a rebate application by clicking here for ecobee and clicking here for Nest. Your $100 rebate cheque should arrive in 4-6 weeks.

You may recall back in August, Ontario’s GreenON program offered a free Nest, ecobee or Honeywell smart thermostat (100,000 thermostats were available) to residents who had a furnace or central air conditioner.

So, they offered them for free, screwed that up and now it’s a $100 rebate?

Amazon says it supports Alexa on the listing page, but yeah I believe you’re correct. Only ecobee4 supports Alexa

Both support Alexa. You can control your e3lite through your Echo or Dot. With e4, you have built in Alexa so you can talk direct to it.

The last offer stated that the government tracked your usage through the thermostat settings; you had to agree to that in order to receive the offer.
