TELUS Launches 4K HDR on Optik TV, Offers Free 50″ LG 4K HDR TV in Promo

TELUS has announced the launch of 4K HDR for its Optik TV customers, which means those with compatible 4K HDR television sets can maximize the viewing potential of their purchase.

The company says it is the only TV provider in Western Canada to offer live and On-Demand 4K content, and now is the only one to bring forth 4K HDR as well.

“We are dedicated to ensuring that Optik TV customers have access to cutting-edge entertainment technologies. 4K HDR, enriching the viewing experience with more than a billion available colours, is the new gold standard in TV picture quality,” said Zainul Mawji, VP of Home Solutions & Complementary Channels at TELUS, in a statement.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) offers a billion colours, which means pictures are more vivid and offer better clarity, for an enhanced viewing experience.

TELUS says Optik TV customers can watch 4K HDR content On Demand with titles such as Blue Planet II and Planet Earth II, while a growing catalogue of 4K HDR titles are available by pressing the On Demand button on your Optik TV Remote, and navigating to the 4K HDR folder. Those with premium Netflix accounts can also stream 4K HDR titles, through the built-in Netflix app on Optik TV.

In order to watch 4K HDR on Optik TV, you’ll require a 4K HDR-compatible TV, a TELUS 4K PVR and have TELUS Internet 50 or higher.

Currently, a TELUS promo is offering a free 50-inch LG 4K HDR Smart TV ($799 MSRP), when new customers sign up for two years of Optik TV and TELUS Internet.

Meanwhile, Shaw TV customers are still waiting for Blue Sky to support 4K content, which apparently is not ready for either 4K or 4K HDR yet, according to the company.

Wanted to check: weren’t they supporting this already? I got a 4K PVR last year and have been watching the (limited) content since. Just want to make sure there isn’t some new hardware they introduced that I should get. Can anyone shed some light?

So do I need to get different hardware or will the Telus 4K PVR I got last year handle the new HDR content?

According to the sourced article….”To experience 4K HDR, TELUS customers need a 4K HDR-capable TV, a TELUS 4K PVR and TELUS Internet 50 or higher”

So it doesnt sound like you need a 4K HDR PVR.

You won’t need new Telus hardware, but your TV needs to be 4K HDR but just 4K.

Aren’t there a variety of HDR formats on the market right now? Which format of HDR is Telus using?

Also, Telus requires you to subscribe to Internet 50 to get 4K HDR?

There are two. HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
HDR10 is likely to be the most common version.
