Public Mobile Offering Free Canada-Wide Talk Upgrade on 90-Day 3G Plans

If you’re a Public Mobile customer on a 90-day plan with 3G data, take note the company is offering a free upgrade from unlimited province-wide talk to Canada-wide talk.

The custom plan calculator shows the same price on any 90-day plan when selecting either province-wide or Canada-wide talk, and a 3G data plan, as seen from the screenshots below:

Unfortunately this only applies to 3G data plans on 90-days and not those with an LTE plan. No word if this is an error or not, but it’s showing and so far users on RFD have been able to switch over.

So this means if you’re on a 90-day plan with 3G data with Public Mobile, go edit your plan to switch to the free unlimited Canada-wide option for your next reload.

Has anyone moved from their LTE speed plans to the 3G and able to share your thoughts, either good or bad?

Or, are there any users around here on the 3G plans able to let us know if you ever think about needing to upgrade?

I know someone who moved from Fido LTE to PM 3G and I haven’t heard any complaints. I’ve personally tested it out for a few months, it wasn’t terrible, but I prefer LTE.

You could always test it first hand. Simply disable LTE by going into your Settings > Cellular > Carrier Data Options and toggle it off and it’ll revert to 3G. Also, make sure you’re not connected to wifi when testing it.

This is not a good test, they throttle LTE speeds to 2.5 mbps. As I sit here I’m getting 7.5mbps 3g in a not great signal area. Meaning it’s worse then 3g speeds. That being said 2.5mbps ain’t that bad.

It’s a very good test. If it’s true that your carrier throttles then that’s your current LTE speed and it’s totally worth it to change to 3G.

I meant disabling lte will not simulate public mobiles “3g” plan speeds. If you do speed test on 3g uncapped(turning off lte), you will see speeds greater then 10mbps. The plan public mobile offers is lte capped at 2.5mbps which is slower. But my parents are on it and I’ve tried and it’s not horrible. It would stream Netflix no problem

Is the throttling something new as I was able to achieve 118mb/s download on Public Mobile a few months ago before I switched to Koodo. If so when did they implement? See my Speed Test results attached.comment image

I believe he’s saying that the “3G Speed” plans are just using LTE that is throttled to 2.5Mbps. So switching to 3G on a plan that’s not throttled will yield higher speeds than what the Public Mobile 3G plans offer.

Current 3G Public Mobile user here. I switched over from LTE a few months ago, and I can say that 3G suits me fine, and I rarely notice the diference. Granted, I don’t watch videos or stream music on my data, so maybe someone who does will have a different experience.
