Apple’s 2015 15-inch MacBook Pro Battery Recall Applies to Nearly 458,000 Units

Apple launched a new voluntary recall and replacement program for 15-inch MacBook Pro models sold between September 2015 and February 2017 last week, saying that the “battery may overheat and pose a fire safety risk.”

A joint recall announcement from the CPSC and Health Canada has today revealed that the program applies to approximately 458,000 potentially affected MacBook Pro units sold in the US and Canada (via MacRumors).

According to Apple, users can determine their model by going to the Apple menu in the top left corner of their screen, and if it shows “MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015),” enter their Mac’s serial number at this page. “If your MacBook Pro is eligible, please stop using it and follow the instructions below to have your battery replaced,” says Apple:

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission or CPSC has since indicated that Apple has received 26 reports of batteries overheating in affected notebooks, including five reports of minor burns and one report of smoke inhalation, as well as 17 reports of minor damage to nearby personal property.

As of June 4, 2019, Apple has received one report of a consumer incident and no reports of injuries in Canada.

Users with affected MacBook Pro units can get their batteries replaced for free at an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store.
