Fortinet researchers have highlighted in a blog post that a serious security flaw has been discovered in the most recent firmware of at least four D-link routers and even after notifying the company of the issues, D-Link is not providing any fix saying the products are at End of Life (EOL) support (via Tom’s Guide).
Three of the four D-link routers in question i.e. DIR-652, DIR-655, DIR-866L, and DHP-1565, are interestingly still being sold online. The source points out that the routers are available for purchase brand new on Amazon’s U.S. website with the DIR-652 even an Amazon’s Choice model.
While D-Link is under no obligation to provide support for a device that it no longer makes, it is strongly advised that you check with the manufacturer to see if it’s still supported before you buy a router:
“We know that if we bought a router last year, we’d expect it to be safe to use for longer than 12 months — especially if it’s an Amazon’s Choice. And some other router makers, such as Netgear, do continue to provide security updates for routers that they no longer manufacture.
We asked around to see how long people expected a home Wi-Fi router to last. The consensus seemed to be between five and eight years.”
So if you have one of these D-link models, we suggest you just throw it out because the flaw will never be fixed.
