OpenSignal has released a report this morning analyzing data from smartphone users based on electoral districts from the recent conclusion of the 2019 Canadian federal election, which saw the Liberal Party of Canada form a minority government.
Essentially, electoral districts where the Liberals won had the best mobile experience when it came to four factors analyzed: download speed, upload speed, 4G availability and video experience. For districts where the Conservatives won, they “had a worse mobile experience across our users, though they had a tied Download Speed Experience and 4G Availability with our users in the ridings where the Bloc Québécois claimed its seats,” writes OpenSignal.
The reasons are simple for these disparities, as voting results showed the ongoing rural-urban divide in Canada, with those in rural areas more likely to vote right-wing or Conservative and those in urban areas more likely to vote towards left/progressive or Liberal.
OpenSignal concluded, “Our data confirms these results: as the Liberal Party is more likely to win its seats in highly-populated urban areas, our users in those ridings are also more likely to have a better mobile experience.”
