Apple to Release First AR Headset in 2022, AR Glasses in 2023 [Report]

Citing internal presentations made at Apple’s headquarters, a report by The information is claiming that Apple will be releasing its first augmented reality (AR) headset in 2022, followed by its first pair of AR glasses in 2023 (via The Verge). The report also offers some new details about Apple’s AR headset codenamed N301.

According to the source, Apple’s AR headset looks somewhat like a slimmer ‘Oculus Quest,’ a VR headset that came out earlier this year.

Apple’s headset has both AR and VR capabilities with external cameras to map the user’s surroundings. It also sports a high-resolution display to show information and blend virtual objects with the real world.

Apple employees also told the publication that developers may be asked to build software for the headset starting 2021.

“After Apple has built this larger headset it plans to release a smaller pair of AR glasses. Unlike the headset, these will be designed to be worn for longer periods of time, with The Information reporting that “current prototypes look like high-priced sunglasses with thick frames that house the battery and chips,” according to a person who has seen prototypes.”

Moreover, the company’s senior managers said they believe the AR sunglasses could supplant the iPhone in about a decade.
