Zagg to Develop Apple AirPower Mat Successor

Zagg Inc., the popular Apple accessory manufacturer, has plans to develop a wireless charging mat that rivals Apple’s cancelled AirPower.

The company has come out to state their plans to release a wireless charging pad, capable of charging iPhones and other devices regardless of where the devices are placed on the said pad, according to Bloomberg in a recent report.

This proved to be a challenge for Apple as it pursued the development of its own wireless charger, the AirPower, at the beginning of 2017. After the announcement a year prior, Apple missed the 2018 release date and ultimately, the 2019 release as well due to quality concerns. The project was shelved and cancelled officially in March of 2019.

This caused a bit of an uproar as Apple consumers were eager to get their hands on a larger, officially branded wireless charger for their Apple devices. After the cancellation, a few accessory companies have attempted to release their own alternatives, but have suffered from requiring devices to be placed in very precise positions. Zagg’s wireless charger seeks to improve that.

Zagg marketing executive Brad Bell told Bloomberg during CES that the company will release the charging mat under the Mophie brand later this year. Zagg is attending the show and speaking to retailers and has been receiving feedback.
