Nintendo Has no Plans to Launch New Switch Models in 2020

Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed that the company will not be releasing a new model of the Switch in 2020, despite rumours and theories of an upgraded model releasing this year.

During a financial briefing, Furukawa stated there were currently “no plans” to release a new Switch model, according to Reuters. This statement from Furukawa comes only a few short months after Nintendo launched the handheld-only version, the Switch Lite.

Many theorized that Nintendo might be developing a high-end model seeing as a new console generation is about to begin later this year. Both Microsoft and Sony are readying themselves to release new consoles this holiday season. With two new consoles upping the ante in the resolution and framerate department, many wondered if Nintendo would try to close that gap.

There seems to be no cause for concern at this time. Nintendo recently revealed that the Switch had overtaken the sales of its Super Nintendo Entertainment System. As of the end of 2019, the Switch had sold an impressive 52.48 million units, 10.81 million of which were sold in 2019. The Switch is showing no signs of slowing down.

With anticipated titles such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons launching in March, the Switch should gain another boost in sales this spring. Supplementing the release of a new Animal Crossing title, Nintendo is planning to release a New Horizons themed Switch on March 13th.

While the Animal Crossing themed Switch won’t be featuring 4K resolutions or a larger screen, it does not mean that a Switch Pro model won’t see the light of day. Nintendo may simply be avoiding the big holiday console push this year. Not wanting to get lost in the noise, Nintendo may have something up its sleeves for 2021.
