Apple has updated one of its support documents today to say it’s now possible to clean your iPhone screen with certain disinfecting wipes, according to the WSJ.
The updated Apple support document on cleaning the company’s products, now has a section that asks, “Is it OK to use a disinfectant on my Apple product?”
The answer:
Using a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you may gently wipe the hard, nonporous surfaces of your Apple product, such as the display, keyboard, or other exterior surfaces. Don’t use bleach. Avoid getting moisture in any opening, and don’t submerge your Apple product in any cleaning agents. Don’t use on fabric or leather surfaces.
Previously, Apple had told customers to not use cleaning products on their iPhones, as the displays have an oil repellent—or oleophobic—coating, resistant to fingerprints, which “cleaning products and abrasive materials will diminish the coating and might scratch your iPhone.”
But with the outbreak of coronavirus worldwide, Apple is saying it’s okay to use Clorox Disinfecting Wipes or 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipes on non-porous surfaces (if you can find them in stock; relax on the toilet paper hoarding, folks).
