Ted Lasso Season 4 Becomes Apple TV’s Biggest Launch Ever

Apple TV has officially scored its biggest series debut to date. The long-awaited Ted Lasso season 4 premiere arrived with record-breaking viewership numbers in the U.S., proving that audiences were more than ready to return to AFC Richmond after a three-year hiatus (via Deadline).

According to Nielsen streaming data provided by Apple, the premiere episode accumulated 296.6 million viewing minutes across its August 4 and August 5 launch window. On August 5 alone, the show generated more than 200 million viewing minutes, making the season debut the single most-streamed program across the entire U.S. for that day.

These figures surpass all previous launch numbers in Apple TV history. The premiere outpaced early debuts for hit titles like Severance and Pluribus, while also eclipsing the premiere benchmarks set by earlier seasons of Ted Lasso itself. That performance is especially notable given the length of the break between seasons.

When season 3 wrapped in May 2023 with an episode titled “So Long, Farewell,” many fans assumed the sports comedy had reached its natural conclusion. Instead of wrapping up for good, the series made a surprise return with a fresh narrative direction.

The fourth season takes the story back to its underdog roots, bringing Jason Sudeikis’s titular coach back to Richmond to take charge of a second-division women’s football team. The storyline focuses on the squad overcoming systemic obstacles in lower-tier league football while learning to embrace unexpected risks. Alongside Sudeikis, returning core cast members include Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, and Jeremy Swift.

The new season also introduces fresh faces to the pitch, including Tanya Reynolds as coach Alice Chilton, alongside Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern, and Grant Feely.

While Apple TV maintains a smaller overall subscriber footprint than legacy rivals such as Netflix or Disney+, Ted Lasso has consistently served as its primary flagship draw. When the third season aired back in 2023, it finished the calendar year as the most-watched original streaming title across the industry.
