Apple Buys Weather App Dark Sky; Android App Gets Axed on July 1

Weather app Dark Sky has been acquired by Apple, according to the developers.

“Today we have some important and exciting news to share: Dark Sky has joined Apple,” reads a company blog post.

“There is no better place to accomplish these goals than at Apple. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to reach far more people, with far more impact, than we ever could alone,” the developers add.

With the acquisition, Dark Sky for iOS remains for purchase in the U.S. App Store. The app is not available in Canada.

As for the Android and Wear OS app, it is “no longer be available for download,” and will shut down on July 1, 2020. Active subscribers will get a refund at that time.

The Dark Sky website will continue to have “weather forecasts, maps, and embeds” until July 1, 2020. After that time, support will be in the form of API and also for iOS app users.

The app’s API is no longer accepting new sign ups and will keep going until the end of 2021.

“To our customers, family and friends, we are grateful for your support over the past eight years. We look forward to continuing to build great products, so stay tuned,” concludes the Dark Sky team.

It will be interesting to see if Apple integrates the Dark Sky app into its own Weather app, which has been lagging far behind other apps for years. We may find out more soon at Apple’s upcoming online WWDC.

Dark Sky is a popular app for its down to the minute weather predictions. It costs $3.99 USD.
