Amazon has announced two new fulfillment centres are going to be built in Southern Ontario, set for Ajax and Hamilton.

Also new are five new delivery stations in Kitchener, Stoney Creek, Vaughan, Etobicoke and Scarborough.

The new fulfillment centres in Hamilton and Ajax are planned to open in 2021 and create over 2,500 full-time jobs, taking the total number of warehouses in Ontario to 10, and 16 across Canada.

“We’re thrilled to continue expanding our operations in Ontario with our newest fulfillment centres in Hamilton and Ajax,” said Sumegha Kumar, Director, Canadian Customer Fulfillment Operations, Amazon Canada, in a statement. “We’ve had great success with the talented workforce in Ontario, and we look forward to creating an additional 2,500 full-time jobs with competitive pay and benefits starting on day one.”

The Hamilton fulfillment centre will be 855,000 square feet and employ over 1,500 employees to pick, pack and ship small items to customers such as books, electronics and toys.

The Ajax fulfillment centre will be one million square feet, with over 1,000 employees ready to pack and ship larger items such as sports equipment, patio furniture, fishing rods, pet food, kayaks, bicycles and other household goods.

As for the new delivery stations, the Etobicoke site has already opened, with Kitchener to follow later this year. Stoney Creek, Scarborough and Vaughan delivery stations will open in 2021. These delivery stations complete the last mile of the Amazon order process, as packages are loaded into vehicles for delivery to customers.
