It appears Rogers and Fido HD voice calls now work between Freedom Mobile customers as well.
When both ends of call have VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling enabled, it is possible to have Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) audio, as confirmed in tests by iPhone in Canada reader Yusuf.
The test involved his LG G8X ThinQ on Freedom Mobile and an iPhone XR on Fido. With both phones having VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling enabled, a wideband audio call was possible between both networks. Disabling VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling would result in a regular voice call and not HD audio.
Rogers-owned brands such as Chatr do not support VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling, so wideband audio won’t be possible here when making a call to Freedom Mobile. It appears there was a change in the past few months for this to happen.
We’ve reached out to both companies for clarification and will update this story accordingly.
Telus and Bell customers are able to have wideband audio calls as both carriers share towers. But this appears to be the first HD voice interoperability between Rogers/Fido and Freedom Mobile (for those that still talk on the phone).
