Sony Partnering With Discord, Social Integration into PlayStation Expected Early 2022

Sony has announced that the company is officially partnering with Discord, the popular communication software on PC and mobile, to “integrate with your social experience on PlayStation beginning early next year.”

In a blog post, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan announced that Sony is consistently looking at new ways to connect players. Part of this initiative is to bring Discord into the fold and its supported 140 million users who frequent the service each month.

Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.

As part of the newly established partnership, Sony has made a minority investment stake during Discord’s Series H round. It’s not been specified how much Sony has invested into Discord. However, Ryan spoke of the first time he met Discord co-founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy. Ryan said he was inspired by their “lifelong love for gaming” and Sony’s “shared passion to help bring friends and communities together in new ways.”

Details on what the partnership may entail are scarce. Sony did not elaborate on whether a full-fledged Discord app would be integrated into PlayStation hardware or if the partnership would see limited integration ie: connect PlayStation Network and Discord account to allow users to chat with friends.

The announcement of the Sony and Discord partnership comes mere weeks after Microsoft was reportedly in talks to acquire Discord for a $10 billion deal. At the time, it was said that Discord was weighing its options, seeking a possible acquisition or going public. Those discussions have since concluded and Discord remains an independent company.

Whatever direction Sony and Discord decide to go in, it won’t be until early 2022 when we’re able to see the full results.
