Telus officially launched its 5G network in Quebec City on Tuesday, part of a $38 million investment in Quebec’s Capitale-Nationale region.
“The significant investments we are making in our world-leading network to rapidly expand our 5G footprint is enabling us to connect the citizens of Quebec City to the people, resources and critical information they need as we continue to navigate the global pandemic,” said Darren Entwistle, President and CEO, in a statement.
Later this year, 20 other communities in the Capitale-Nationale region will get 5G as well, including: Baie-Saint-Paul, Beaupré, Boischatel, Fossambault-sur-le-Lac, Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Saint-Pierre-de-l’Île-d’Orléans, and Stoneham-et-Tewkesbury.
Telus says its 5G network will reach 615 communities in Canada (coverage for 70% of the population) by the end of the year, including 157 in Quebec.
In a separate announcement, Telus says it will be investing $63 million into British Columbia’s capital city. The company says Greater Victoria will see 5G network expansion, new wireless infrastructure and expanded PureFibre internet (we’re still waiting for PureFibre to reach our front door).
“TELUS is proud to make this generational investment in Greater Victoria, providing the technology to connect citizens to loved ones, as well as vital resources and information as we continue to navigate the global pandemic,” said Entwistle.
The company also notes the Telus Victoria Community Board has been renamed to the Telus Vancouver Island Community Board, as it now supports Central and North Island charities.
