Amazon Pushes Back Office Return to January 2022 Amid Rise of Delta Variant

In response to the rise of the COVID-19 Delta variant, Amazon has delayed its timeline for employees to return to regular work in the office until early next year (via Geekwire). Previously, the company had told its employees to start working in the office regularly around the second week of September.

Amazon has now announced its new date of resuming regular work for its employees to be Jan. 3, 2022. The retail giant has, however, not yet implemented any vaccine mandate for those who do work in the office, as opposed to other companies like Microsoft, Google, and Facebook.

“Its decision ups the ante for corporate responses to the rise of the COVID-19 Delta variant. Microsoft earlier this week said the full reopening of its U.S. workplaces will now take place no earlier than Oct. 4. Google and Apple currently have similar timelines.

Amazon informed employees of the new timeline in a message earlier this morning. The company currently requires employees to wear masks in the office, except for those who can verify they’ve been fully vaccinated.

The role of Amazon and other tech giants in such decisions often results in other companies following their lead.
