Rogers, Telus, Bell Continue to Dominate Opensignal’s Mobile and 5G Experience Awards

Opensignal released two reports on Wednesday, its Mobile Network Experience and 5G Experience report, detailing ‘winners’ when it came to 4G and 5G experiences in Canada, and again Rogers, Telus and Bell took home the major awards in each category.

For the Mobile Network Experience report for August 2021, Telus won four categories outright, while was a joint winner in two others:

  • Video Experience
  • Games Experience (tie with Rogers)
  • Voice App Experience
  • Download Speed Experience
  • Upload Speed Experience
  • 4G Coverage Experience (tie with Bell)

Bell was a joint winner with Rogers for 4G Availability.

According to Opensignal, “with an average download speed of 73.9 Mbps, our users experience much faster speeds when connected to Telus than on either Bell or Rogers.”

“This is the ninth consecutive time TELUS’ mobile network has earned top recognition from Opensignal, as our team, including our engineers and network innovators, have worked diligently to keep Canadians connected to the people and information that matter most,” said Darren Entwistle, President and CEO of TELUS, in an issued statement to iPhone in Canada.

5G Mobile Experience Awards Canada – August 2021

For the 5G Experience report, Opensignal said “Rogers has pulled ahead of the pack in the 5G race and wins four out of seven 5G awards outright and is also part of a three-way joint win in 5G Upload Speed Experience.”

In the graphic below, we see Rogers taking sole awards for:

  • 5G Availability
  • 5G Reach
  • 5G Games Experience
  • 5G Voice App Experience

For 5G Upload Speed award, Rogers was in a 3-way tie with Bell and Telus.

Bell and Telus were joint winners in the 5G Video Experience and 5G Download Speed categories.

“Our users on Bell and Telus observed average 5G download speeds of 174.8 Mbps and 168.4 Mbps, respectively — 63.2-69.7 Mbps faster than those on Rogers,” said Opensignal.

“Today’s recognition proves that our network investments are supporting Canadians with a world-class 5G experience as we continue to enhance and expand the network across Canada, now reaching more than 800 communities from coast to coast to coast,” said Jorge Fernandes, Chief Technology Officer, Rogers Communications, in an issued statement to iPhone in Canada.

With the federal government earning $8.91 billion from the 3500 MHz 5G spectrum auction, Opensignal says “the use of 3.5 GHz spectrum band for 5G in Canada should help Canada’s carriers to accelerate the 5G experience.”
