New Sonos Beam with Dolby Atmos Unveiled: Pre-Order in Canada for $559

Sonos has unveiled its new Beam (Gen 2) sound bar on Tuesday morning, now supporting Dolby Atmos and an upgraded sound experience.

The newly updated Sonos Beam is the same size as its predecessor, but now features five speaker arrays versus three in its predecessor. Sonos says the new arrays are dedicated to surround sound and height info, for a more immersive home theatre experience.

The Sonos Beam (Gen 2) comes with four elliptical mid woofers, one centre tweeter and three passive radiators, all behind a new updated wraparound plastic grille design from its bigger, badder brother, the Arc (read our Arc review here).

Sonos says the new “premium polycarbonate grille” (plastic instead of mesh cloth like before) is easier to clean and fares better against wear and tear.

There’s a new faster processor in the Sonos Beam, offering a 40% performance bump for better weighted depth, clarity and spaciousness.

Beam (Gen 2) supports HDMI eARC for Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, uncompressed multichannel LPCM, while the ability to have decoding for DTS Digital Surround is coming soon.

The new Beam also has some updated colours (still white or black) with a “completely monochromatic finish”, along with a colour-matched cable cove, power cable and HDMI cable. The new sound bar also uses a dedicated 5GHz WiFi radio.

The Sonos Beam (Gen 2) plans to support Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos Music in select markets later this year.

With the debut of the Sonos Beam (Gen 2), the company told iPhone in Canada it will no longer produce the predecessor, however it will still receive software updates. The existing stock of the original Beam can be found at retailers for $499 CAD, if still available.

You can pre-order the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) for $559 CAD in Canada today, ahead of its October 5 launch. We’ll have more on this new Sonos Beam soon—stay tuned.
