Activision to Release Next Three Call of Duty Entries on PlayStation: Bloomberg

Activision Blizzard has reportedly committed to releasing the next three entries in the Call of Duty series on PlayStation, following its buyout by Microsoft.

According to a new report from Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier, the 2022 and 2023 Call of Duty releases, at least, will both be available on PlayStation consoles as well as Windows PC and Xbox, along with a “new iteration” of Call of Duty: Warzone.

The games will be released on Sony’s consoles as part of an existing agreement between the company and Activision; that commitment will remain in effect “for at least the next two years,” Bloomberg says, citing four people “with knowledge of the deal.”

Beyond these “existing Call of Duty agreements,” it’s unclear whether or not future entries in the franchise will come out on PlayStation or not. On one hand, the majority of Call of Duty‘s players are on PlayStation, meaning that Microsoft would be leaving money on the table if they made Call of Duty exclusive to Xbox consoles.

On the other, Call of Duty being exclusive to Xbox would likely drive many gamers that didn’t previously have plans to get an Xbox to consider buying one, bringing more players into the Xbox ecosystem.

In the past, Microsoft has honoured any preexisting console platform agreements, even after their acquisitions are complete, so it’s not very surprising that at least some Call of Duty games will end up on PlayStation for the next couple of years.

The report comes just over a week after Microsoft announced it acquired Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion USD, with the deal expected to close by June 2023.
