Russian Government to Partially Restrict Facebook Access Starting Today
According to a report from state-owned news agency RIA Novosti, the Russian government will partially restrict access to Facebook starting today. The announcement was made earlier today by the country’s telecommunications and internet regulator (via Vice).
The report notes that the government’s regulatory body has issued the order and accused Facebook of being involved in violations of the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens.
While the details of the restriction are not yet clear, the announcement calls out Facebook on blocking Russian media outlets RIA Novosti, Lenta.ru, and gazeta.ru. Facebook has not yet issued any official comment regarding the matter.
The news comes as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine pushes toward the country’s capital in Kyiv.
